There are 3 main types of lighting:

General:
This provides an area with overall illumination. Also know as ambient lighting, general lighting radiates a comfortable level of brightness. It can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights.

Task:
Helps you perform specific tasks such as cooking, computer work, hobbies etc. It can be provided by recessed and track lights, pendants and portable lamps. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eyestrain.

Accent:
This adds visual interest to a room. It can be used to highlight pictures, plants and other objects, and also to highlight the texture of a wall. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighitng around it. This is usually is provided by recessed or wall mounted fixtures.
As well as combining different types of lighting, the use of dimmers enables a room to be used for several functions. This will allow a higher light level for working or reading and a lower light level for relaxation. Colour too is important. Incandescent bulbs help create a cosy atmosphere in living areas while fluorescent lamps give a cooler, more efficient light for utility rooms. A room painted in a dark colour will need more light as much of it will be absorbed, whist lighter colours reflect light. You can add colour to a room by illuminating a coloured surface.
Avoid glare by placing the lights at a height which prevents the eye from seeing the bulb directly. Pendants should not be hung so high that the bulb is clearly visible underneath. Take care that lights placed over reflective surfaces such as glass tables have a diffuser in them.

Room by Room
Entrances, Halls and Staircases
Use plenty of different light sources here.
These areas should be warm and welcoming, as well as practical. General lighting with a central fixture can be supplemented with table lamps to create interest.
Staircases need to be well lit - pendants with low energy bulbs are a good idea here.

Living Room
Use plenty of different light sources here.
A central fixture with suitable dimmer - consider a Chandelier or other statement piece.
Adjustable reading lights beside a sofa or chair
Two or three table lamps positioned around the room on tables, shelves or furniture to give a room a spacious feeling as the light radiates inward.
Bookcases, pictures and objects of interest illuminated with picture lights or halogen spot lights.
Wall lights and pendants on a dimmer switch can raise the level of illumination in the room without needing to adjust any of the light sources. Ensure to avoid glare if they are mounted too high. Indirect light from wall washers (light fittings designed to light the wall and ceiling often made in ceramic or plaster) will create dramatic effects. Remember that the light given from wall washers will be coloured by the surface on which they are mounted.
Floor lamps can be very effective at adding general illumination to a dark area where it is not easy to fit wall lights, ceiling lights or table lamps. A floor uplighter gives a bright wash on the ceiling. Some are fitted with dimmers and others have a second flexible arm for reading.

Dining Room
The main light source here will be over the dining table. Don\\'t hang a pendant so low that your diners have to peer round it: about 60cm above the table is about right. Better still fit a rise and fall pendant. The use of a dimmer will allow the table to be used for everyday tasks and yet give a low mood light for dining.
If you have a glass dining table, make sure the light is fitted with a diffuser so that your diners are not looking ar a reflection of the light bulb.
Long tables can be very effectively lit with a longer light fitting suspended on two wires.

Study
General background illumination should be supplemented by adjustable task lamps. Wall lights and uplighters will give good background light. Try to ensure lights do not reflect off a computer screen.

Bedroom
A variety of light sources are needed here
Table or wall lamps beside the bed with individual switches and dimmers
Directional spotlights to highlight dressing areas
General ambient lighting using dimmers where possible
Consider statement pieces such as chandeliers
2 slim lamps on a dressing table will give a good working light.
